Chapter 7

Vic caught his bearings before they rushed outside. Willet had set up in a mostly abandoned part of the small town. Bribes kept the surrounding buildings in poor enough shape that no one wanted to move into them. This meant they didn’t have to worry about any civilians getting in their way.

However, it also had a disadvantage. The enemy could use scans for lifeforms and find them easily enough. Having lost his stealth suit with his ship, he didn’t have any defense against it. Portia’s bodysuit was designed to take a shot or two, to defend against debris or the casual blunt force trauma.

In other words, we have to get to her ship as quickly as possible then hope to God we can get out of here.

They hurried across the road, bursting through the backdoor of the next building over. It had the layout of an old department store. A few overturned shelves still remained, broken up on the ground. He slammed the door behind them. Nothing big enough to bar it happened to be close by so he stepped further inside.

“What’re we doing?” Portia asked. “This place is practically a death trap. If it’s what I think it is, then we only have two exits and we just came through one of them. The front will be boarded up or worse, intact. That means glass is likely. I doubt the owners sprung for transparent steel.”

“There has to be one more option,” Vic said. “What about storage? Where they take in goods? A loading area? Anything like that. We can get out that way.”

“Maybe a basement with a ramp?” Portia shrugged. “But I think we’re venturing dangerously into wishful thinking territory there. If we’re wrong, we’ll be stuck in here. They’ll get us for sure.”

“I’m not going to decide for us. What would you prefer?”

“I suppose making straight for my ship is out of the question.” Portia ran a hand through her hair. “I don’t know. This whole thing is so…” She closed her eyes. “Okay, we stick to the buildings. Let’s go out the front, get to the next. We’ll get as far as we can under the protection of the structures to keep from being spotted by the fighters… or at least shot.”

“Sounds good. Lots of running.” Vic pushed through the main room toward the front. Light came through cracks in the boarded up area. She was right. The glass was long gone, replaced by dust and filth accumulating in the corners. He held his weapon out, looking in all directions in the wide open space. “This place is huge.”

“Only because it’s empty,” Portia replied. “If it was in operation it would feel seriously cramped.” She stepped ahead of him, hustling to the wooden planks placed over the opening. She peeked through a crack between them, a splintered section that had rotted away. “Nothing’s out there.”

A sonic boom overhead made the whole building shake. Dust drifted down from the ceiling. Another engine joined the first, this one so close Vic’s ears started ringing.
